The Creative Arts Community, which operates the Menucha Retreat Center in Corbett, curates a group show of artwork this March at Squib created by participants of the residential workshop.  The program, started in 1966,  offers 120 creatives a two-week immersion experience focused on primarily visual arts, including fine and applied arts. Volunteer board members selected the artwork to represent  finished pieces by typical campers, some of which are exhibiting for the first time. Ceramic, collage,  metalsmithing and assemblages will be on display.
An artist reception for all March exhibitors happens during Art Spree 6p First Friday, March 1st at Pop Up art gallery in the Salem Center Mall.

Larson’s use of watercolor, acrylic, oil graphite and charcoal create  stunning contrasts that draw viewers into the artwork. 4. Among the Forest Floor, a large format acrylic on wood painting, captures the emergence of springtime on the floor of Portland’s Forest Park.
She presently curates the the Vestible at disjecta in Portland, is the exhibition director at Orlo and a Regional Arts & Culture Council Public Art Murals Committee Member.

An artist reception for new exhibitors will be held on Friday, March 1 at 6 pm during Art Spree at Pop Up art gallery in the Salem Center Mall with refreshments provided. Imbued Landscapes will be on exhibit throughout March.

Squib is a 60 ft.  exhibition area in the front windows of the former Grant Department Store downtown and may be viewed 24 hours a day. The area opened in May 2012 and offers exposure for area creatives while reducing blight. Pop Up art gallery is shifting gears to offer more programming and opportunities for creatives, volunteers and anyone interested in Salem placemaking. We have the gallery space for at least another year and two exhibition spaces on Liberty St. that need curating. We need volunteers for staffing, event planning and production. We also need help with the 10th Mid-Valley Video Festival in February and 6th Cherry City Music Festival in April.

Wanna volunteer? Drop into the gallery between 6p-8p on Thursday, January 17 for more info or contact us. We’re located upstairs next to Made in Oregon in the Salem Center Mall.

IMG_6437Yoko Ito, a professional photographer, experienced the 2011 tsunami first hand. She grabbed her camera and started documenting the destruction. The results are on display at Pop Up art gallery through January 2. Over 100 color photographs with Japanese and English captions capture the detail of ordinary people responding to the disaster.

Tonight at the opening, Willamette alum Anna Thomas will lead a discussion about her time in Japan with Yoko. Join us for the opening and a Pop Up holiday party from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. BYO.
